What Has Changed

Minor changes to the forecast with this update.

Key Messages

1) A cold front will bring a few light showers to the North Country Monday, with mainly dry weather elsewhere. The front will usher in a brief cooldown for Tuesday.

2) Turning much warmer Wednesday through the end of the week with a chance of a few light showers Thursday night.

Discussion

KEY MESSAGE 1...A cold front will bring a few light showers to the North Country Monday, with mainly dry weather elsewhere. The front will usher in a brief cooldown for Tuesday.

A mid level trough will sharpen and dig southeast across Quebec tonight through Tuesday night, pushing a surface cold front south across the eastern Great Lakes and New England on Monday. Warm advection and moisture transport ahead of the system will bring an increase in high clouds tonight, but dry weather will still prevail.

Monday, the moisture starved and weakly forced cold front will move south across the area. The best moisture convergence will be found across the North Country, where the greatest chance of a few showers will be found. Farther west, the front will pass through mainly dry with just a very low chance of a few sprinkles or an isolated brief shower. A brief period of stratus will develop along and behind the cold front with some modest lake induced instability and upslope flow late Monday through Monday night.

Tuesday, any lingering lake effect clouds across Western and Central NY will quickly scatter out in the morning as strong subsidence and much drier air build into the region. Temperatures will be cooler despite the sunshine as 850MB temps bottom out around around +3C in Western NY and -3C across the Saint Lawrence Valley. This will support highs in the low to mid 50s in Western NY and mid to upper 40s for the North Country.

KEY MESSAGE 2...Turning much warmer Wednesday through the end of the week with a chance of a few light showers Thursday night.

Strong surface high pressure will center over New England Wednesday, then drift off the southern New England coast by Thursday. Deep southwesterly flow in the wake of the departing high will allow temperatures to soar well above average following the brief cooldown on Tuesday. The warmth will peak Thursday with highs in the upper 60s to lower 70s.

Aviation

VFR will prevail through tonight. Clear skies this afternoon will give way to increasing high clouds tonight ahead of an approaching cold front.

Monday, a moisture starved cold front will move south across the area in the afternoon. The front may produce a few light showers across the North Country and Saint Lawrence Valley with mainly VFR VSBY. A period of MVFR CIGS in low stratus will likely develop areawide from north to south Monday afternoon and evening along and behind the front as modest lake instability and upslope flow develop.

Lake effect and upslope clouds will linger across Western and Central NY Monday night with VFR/MVFR CIGS.

Outlook...

Tuesday through Thursday...Mainly VFR. A chance of some local IFR in river valley fog each late tonight and morning across the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes.

Thursday night through Friday...VFR/MVFR with a chance of showers, mainly Thursday evening through early Friday morning.
