Key Messages
Updated at 1134 PM CDT Tue Oct 20 2026
- Rain chances (35% to 45%) increase from west to east Friday through the weekend, with highest rain chances Saturday and Sunday.
Short Term
(This afternoon through Wednesday night) Issued at 1249 PM CDT Tue Oct 20 2026
A quiet weather pattern is anticipated for today and tomorrow. Mid to upper level ridging across the southern US will maintain large scale sinking and dry motion, keeping rain chances very low (below 10%), even during the day. Highs rise into the mid 70s to mid 80s F areawide, while lows fall into the mid 50s to lower 60s F. Southeast winds across the area are expected to remain light, except for breezy conditions (15 to 25 mph) at times, especially across the Guadalupes/Delawares and parts of the Lower Trans Pecos during the afternoon. Tomorrow will be a few degrees warmer than today as the mid to upper ridge strengthens over the area. A slight warming trend in highs continues into Thursday, before rain chances increase from west to east and cooler temperatures move back in. More details on this in the Long Term Discussion.
Long Term
(Thursday through Monday) Issued at 1249 PM CDT Tue Oct 20 2026
Thursday continues the stretch of warm temperatures and dry weather, before increased rain chances by the end of the week. A mid to upper disturbance develops from the Pacific SW into the Desert SW late week through the weekend, providing lift and focusing of moisture for development of showers/storms. Highs Friday and Saturday will be trending down but remain warm (70s and 80s F) as cloud cover and rain chances increase. However, highs are forecast to further decrease into the 60s and 70s F by Sunday through early next week in association with a cold front. Highest rain chances (35% to 45%) currently look to be Friday night through Saturday morning from the Presidio Valley into SE NM plains, and throughout Sunday areawide, with highest chances (45% to 55%) over the SE NM plains into northern Permian Basin. Ensembles indicate highest rainfall totals of at least a few tenths of an inch over the SE NM plains into northern Permian Basin. However, at this time, rainfall totals remain uncertain. Rain chances decrease below 35% to 45% by the early to middle of next week as the cold front clears the area and drier weather returns.
