...Synopsis...
A broad ridging pattern persists through the work week before troughing off the southern California coast begins to move ashore by Thursday morning. Widespread highs in the 70s are in store through Friday with record warm overnight temperatures in the 50s likely Friday. There is now high confidence that a progressive trough ejects into the Northern Plains by Friday night. This and the associated cold front behind it support a windy and much cooler (albeit seasonable) pattern change with limited rainfall chances. A stray thunderstorm cannot be ruled out Friday given the unusual warmth and instability.
The most notable impact through the period will be elevated winds Friday and Saturday, initially out of the south and turning to the west Saturday after a strong cold front passes through Friday night. The most likely range for top wind gusts is 35-45 mph both days, though there is moderate confidence for a few gusts to 50 mph Saturday in the Devils Lake Basin. Any exposed soils present a risk for patchy blowing dust during the windiest periods. After temperatures well above seasonal averages for the next few days, a more typical northwest upper level flow returns high temperatures to the 40s and 50s starting Sunday through at least the middle of next week. A mostly zonal flow does not favor any significant precipitation or temperature anomalies next week.
Overall, enjoy these last few days of dry weather and 60s to 70s for highs, as they will become increasingly fleeting in the coming weeks with seasonal normals dropping into the 30s and 40s for highs.
