Forecasters' discussion

From the National Weather Service office in RNK, issued 5 hrs ago

What Has Changed

Updated AVN forecasts. Fog coverage in the New River and James River Valleys is a little greater this morning compared to over the weekend. May take until 9-10AM to burn off.

No significant changes to the forecast. Guidance maintains dry forecast through the week in spite of some periodic cloud cover.

Key Messages

1) Dry weather through the week.

Discussion

KEY MESSAGE 1: Dry weather through the week.

Persistent High pressure surface and aloft will promote dry conditions through the week. Strong radiational cooling conditions will exist at night so temperatures will have some large swings with lows in the 30s/40s and highs in the 60s/70s.

The upper flow is progged to get to be more zonal by midweek with continued sfc ridging so morning lows will be higher with generally 40s in the mountains and mid 40s to low 50s in the piedmont. Mid/upper moisture will also be on the increase, so there is opportunity for more cloud cover by Wednesday...but nothing available for precip production.

The next chance for precipitation should come by next Sunday with a possible upper shortwave and increased moisture field. For now most locations should be dry for Halloween festivities on Saturday/Saturday night with pleasant temperatures in the 60s near sunset.

Aviation

Dense fog in the mountain valleys this morning. Expected to dissipate between 13-14Z.

Aside from the fog, VFR conditions expected through the 24 hour valid TAF period. Mostly clear skies are progged mid-morning and through the afternoon...winds light and variable. Will have typical morning mountain valley fog for a few hours prior to daybreak again Tuesday morning.

EXTENDED OUTLOOK...

VFR conditions will likely continue through the week. A layer of high cloud is expected to cross the region Wednesday with cloud bases AOA 20kft. The next best chance of any precipitation may not be until Sunday Nov 1st associated with next best chance for widespread sub-VFR. Still looking at daily early morning impacts from river fog through the week with temporary impacts to vsbys for mainly mountain valley terminals such as KLWB and KBCB.
