The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued a

* Severe Thunderstorm Warning for... East Central Sandoval County in north central New Mexico...

* Until 815 PM MDT.

* At 729 PM MDT, a severe thunderstorm was located near Jemez Pueblo, or 26 miles north of Rio Rancho, moving northeast at 25 mph.

HAZARD...60 mph wind gusts and quarter size hail.

SOURCE...Radar indicated.

IMPACT...Hail damage to vehicles is expected. Expect wind damage to roofs, siding, and trees.

* Locations impacted include... Jemez Springs, Jemez State Monument, Jemez Pueblo, Ponderosa and Canon.

What to do

Seek shelter inside a well-built structure and stay away from windows. This storm is capable of producing damaging winds and large hail.

Accumulations of small hail on roads can create very slick and hazardous driving conditions.

What: Flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues to be possible.

Where: Portions of central, east central, north central, northeast, and southeast New Mexico, including the following areas, in central New Mexico, Central Highlands, Eastern Lincoln County, Estancia Valley, Middle Rio Grande Valley including the Albuquerque Metro Area, Sandia and Manzano Mountains including Edgewood, South Central Highlands and South Central Mountains. In east central New Mexico, De Baca County and Guadalupe County. In north central New Mexico, East Slopes Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Espanola Valley, Far Northwest Highlands, Glorieta Mesa Including Glorieta Pass, Jemez Mountains, Northern Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Northwest Highlands, Santa Fe Metro Area, Southern Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Tusas Mountains Including Chama and Upper Rio Grande Valley. In northeast New Mexico, Eastern San Miguel County, Far Northeast Highlands, Johnson and Bartlett Mesas Including Raton Pass and Northeast Highlands. In southeast New Mexico, Chaves County Plains and Southwest Chaves County.

When: Through late tonight.

Impacts: Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Creeks and streams may rise out of their banks. Flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas. Low-water crossings may be flooded. Storm drains and ditches may become clogged with debris.

Additional details: - Showers and thunderstorms will expand in coverage though the afternoon. Rainfall rates in excess of 1 inch per hour may cause flash flooding on already saturated soils. Arroyos, small streams and channels may quickly rise with water from heavy rainfall. Repeated rounds of storms will increase the risk for flash flooding. - http://www.weather.gov/safety/flood

...The Flood Advisory is extended for the following rivers in New Mexico...

Jemez River Above Jemez Pueblo affecting Sandoval County.

What: Flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues.

Where: Jemez River above Jemez Pueblo.

When: Until Sunday afternoon.

Impacts: At 7.0 feet, Between 7 and 8 feet multiple locations along highway 4 between San Ysidro and Jemez Springs will see water crossing the road from tributaries and low water crossing points. The Wastewater Treatment plant 1 mile downstream of Jemez Springs can be impacted between 7 and 7.7 feet. Water will be on Highway 4 at mile marker 1, 2 and 13. Homes near the river in San Ysidro could be impacted.

Additional details: - At 8:45 AM MDT Saturday the stage was 4.4 feet. - Bankfull stage is 6.0 feet. - Forecast...The river is expected to rise to a crest of 6.4 feet this evening. - Action stage is 6.0 feet. - Flood stage is 7.0 feet. - http://www.weather.gov/safety/flood

If you encounter a flooded roadway, turn around and find an alternative route.

Caution is urged when walking near riverbanks.
