Key Messages

Updated at 559 PM CDT Mon Oct 19 2026

- Daytime temperatures warm into the 80s and low 90s this week.

- No rain is expected through the majority of the forecast period. Slight chances of rain return for areas near the Rio Grande and Edwards Plateau by Sunday.

Short Term

(Tonight through Tuesday night) Issued at 123 PM CDT Mon Oct 19 2026

Cirrus and altostratus clouds have been streaming across the region thanks to westerly and southwesterly flow aloft, but this has been largely uneventful as nearby ridging enforces dry conditions. KDFX radar shows some light returns at about 3 kft AGL west of the Rio Grande, but much of this will evaporate in the dry subcloud layer. That same ridge will stay in the area through the week, keeping rain chances out of the picture during the workweek. Ample sunshine will allow the local airmass to warm, so temperatures will gradually uptrend this week from the current near average values to above average values later in the week. Highs today will range from the upper 70s to mid 80s, and broadly in the mid to upper 80s tomorrow for most of the area. Overnight temperatures should also trend up, but dry conditions will keep nights cool and lows near to slightly below average for mid October in the 50s to low 60s tonight and tomorrow night.

Long Term

(Wednesday through next Monday) Issued at 123 PM CDT Mon Oct 19 2026

Ridging stays over South Central Texas and strengthens midweek with dry weather continuing, allowing highs to inch a little higher with more of the I-35 corridor, Coastal Plains, and Rio Grande Plains getting into the upper 80s. The bulk of the heat accompanying the ridge should remain centered over northern Mexico and West Texas, so highs are expected to plateau mid to late week. We will gradually trade out lows in the 50s for lows in the 60s during the week as the ridge encourages more onshore flow and slightly higher moisture.

The next atmospheric of disturbance of interest comes in the form of a trough progressing over the western US this weekend. Our overhead ridging favors this troughing being deflected to the north away from the area. This in turn keeps rain chances low (below 25 percent for most areas), but a few isolated rains are possible along the low- level response to the approaching trough, mainly along the Rio Grande and Edwards Plateau Sunday into Monday. Otherwise, most of South Central Texas is forecast to remain devoid of raid for the next seven days. Daytime temperatures this upcoming weekend are very likely (above 90%) to remain above 80F. Lows should continue to be in the upepr 50s to mid 60s.

Aviation

(00Z TAFS) Issued at 559 PM CDT Mon Oct 19 2026

Any breezy winds in the west will decrease over the next few hours with light wind and VFR conditions through the overnight hours. There is better model consensus that low clouds develop near sunrise over portions of the southern Edwards Plateau and along the Rio Grande which likely impacts KDRT. Have included a prevailing MVFR ceiling for KDRT from 14-18Z Tuesday morning but timing may need to be slightly adjusted in future updates. Northeast to east wind less than 10 knots prevails over I-35 terminals Tuesday afternoon with a southeasterly wind around 12 knots along the Rio Grande.
