Key Messages

- Patchy dense fog may occur in eastern parts of the area later this evening into early Wednesday morning, with some dense fog into tonight/Wednesday morning over portions of the nearshore waters of Lake Michigan.

- Dry with a gradual warming trend into Saturday night/Sunday, then possibly some showers and cooler temperatures Sunday night into early next week.

Update

Issued 810 PM CDT Tue Oct 20 2026

No changes to the going forecast.

With perfectly clear skies evident on Satellite, nearly calm winds, and a remnant lake-breeze boundary washed onshore, conditions are primed for radiational cooling and (eventually) fog development later this evening into Tonight.

Short Term

Issued 235 PM CDT Tue Oct 20 2026

Tonight through Friday:

High pressure will shift further to the east northeast of the region tonight, with another high pressure system shifting east into and northeast of the region Thursday into Friday.

There is an area of patchy dense fog over the nearshore waters of Lake Michigan for areas north of North Point Lighthouse, which may continue to linger there into tonight. This may push back onshore tonight into early Wednesday morning for eastern portions of the area. Kept the fog mention in the forecast for eastern parts of the area for this period. Will have to watch trends to see if a Dense Fog Advisory would be needed at some point.

Otherwise, dry conditions are expected into the end of the week. Temperatures will remain above seasonal normal values as well, with highs into the upper 60s to around 70 degrees each day Wednesday into Friday. Onshore winds each day should bring slightly cooler temperatures to areas near Lake Michigan. Lows each night should rise into the middle to upper 40s by Wednesday night and Thursday night.

Long Term

Issued 235 PM CDT Tue Oct 20 2026

Friday night through Tuesday:

500 mb cluster analysis generally shows an anomalous 500 mb ridge axis developing over the region Friday night into Saturday night, before becoming more zonal Sunday into Monday. This should result in south winds maintaining warm temperatures into the weekend. There may finally be a cold front that shifts slowly southeast across the region Sunday into Sunday night or Monday. This may have enough moisture and upward vertical motion with it to bring 20 to 30 percent chances for showers.

Cold air advection behind the front with north to northeast winds may bring cooler and more seasonable temperatures for early next week. This is supported by ensemble member trends.
