Discussion
KEY MESSAGE 1...Dry and tranquil weather will prevail through this weekend.
Clear skies persist across western New York early this afternoon as a ridge of high pressure across the Midwest into the lower Great Lakes region slowly drifts eastward. Latest GOES imagery shows a strip of cloud cover moving across Lake Superior along a cold front associated with a surface low up near the Hudson Bay. This weak, dry cold front will continue to approach western NY late tonight into early Thursday. Deep layer moisture will be rather limited keeping us dry, but a cooling low-level air mass with 850mb temps dropping near 2-5 degC passing over lake temperatures around 60 degF should be sufficient enough lake response for afternoon cloud cover Thursday southeast of the lakes. Friday will be a few degrees cooler, but still seasonable as mid-level heights will begin to rise with an upper level ridge building across the central CONUS. This will support high pressure building back into the northeast with clear skies and a return to slightly above normal temperatures for late October persisting through the weekend.
Aviation
While strong surface high pressure will prevail across the region through this afternoon and through Thursday, a weak dry cold front will drop southeast across the region Thursday. However, ahead of the front weak variable winds and clear skies will support widespread VFR conditions to prevail through tonight. However, localized river valley fog with MVFR to LIFR across the western Southern Tier and the Black River Valley may develop after 03Z Thursday through 12Z Thursday. This being said, the vertical wind profile in the lowest 2kft AGL is still expected to be unfavorable for the fog to reach KJHW.
In the wake of the cold frontal passage Thursday, VFR conditions will prevail, with some low end VFR CIGs developing due to lake enhanced clouds southeast of both Lakes.
Outlook...
Thursday Night through Monday...Dry weather and mainly VFR expected. However, localized river valley fog possible with MVFR to LIFR in the Black River Valley and Western Southern Tier river valleys each morning.
